Open Shelters

Shelter openings vary with each emergency. Shelter openings will differ by size and intensity of a disaster. Stay tuned to local media for a listing of which shelters will be opened for an event.

Do not go to the shelter until local officials announce through the media that the shelter is open.


Pet Friendly Shelters

Because of the close quarters in shelters, there are a some specifics and rules that Pet Friendly Shelter users will be required to abide by. They are as follows:

SPECIFICS

  1. Owners must bring their own cage or carrier for their dogs or cats. If you do not have a cage or carrier, you will not be allowed into the shelter.
  2. Owners must stay with their pet(s). The shelter is NOT a drop off facility for pets.
  3. Only dogs, cats and birds are allowed. No other animals/pets will be accepted.
  4. Owners should bring their own bedding (blankets, pillows, etc).
  5. Once the pet-friendly shelter area reaches maximum capacity for pets, no additional pets will be accepted at that particular shelter and, at that point, owners with pets will need to seek alternative shelter.

RULES

  1. Pet(s) must remain in carrier (except at scheduled exercise times).
  2. Owners must provide food, treats, kitty litter & litter box, medications and other supplies as needed. (newspaper/plastic bags for waste, toys/comfort items/towels/blankets, first aid supplies, water/food bowls, manual can opener, leash, muzzle - if necessary)
  3. Owner(s) agree to properly feed, water and care for their pet(s).
  4. Owner(s) agree to sanitize the areas used by their pet(s) - including proper waste disposal and disinfecting (sanitizing agent provided by School Board).
  5. Bring personal hand sanitizer - will need to clean hands frequently.
  6. Owner(s) will provide current proof of vaccination(s) or current pet license for their pet(s).
  7. Owner(s) will not permit other shelter occupants to handle or approach their pet(s). Cage doors will be latched and secured with wire or rope.
  8. Owner(s) will maintain proper identification on their pet(s) and carrier(s) at all times.
  9. Owner(s) shall permit their pet(s) to be examined to determine if medical or stress conditions are present and requires attention; owner(s) also agree to the administration of medication to alleviate any symptoms.
  10. Owner(s) acknowledge that failure to follow these rules may result in the removal of their pet(s).
  11. Owner(s) agree that if their pet(s) become unruly, aggressive, show signs of contagious disease, is infected by parasites (fleas, ticks, lice, etc.), the pet(s) may be removed to a more isolated location.
  12. Owner(s) acknowledge that any decision concerning the care and welfare of their pet(s) and the shelter population as a whole are within the sole discretion of Manatee County Animal Services or designee - whose decisions are final.
